Proclaim God’s Wonders to the Next Generation

I am impressed by scripture that we need to tell the next generation about God’s works.

“One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4

Certainly, we should share how God parted the sea for the people of Israel to save them from Pharaoh’s chariots, and horsemen (Exodus 14). It is also good for us to be with children so they can see us react to everyday observations of God’s works with the truths of God’s word.

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:7

Imagine being with a young person as you observe a Giant Swallowtail butterfly. A small field surrounded on three sides by woods in Cuiver River State Park near Troy, Missouri is a good place to watch this butterfly gathering nectar from tall wildflowers. Surely the beautiful artwork in the wing pattern and color proclaims the order, beauty, and goodness of God.

“They [God’s works] shall pour forth the fame of your [God’s] abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.”  Psalm 145:7

It was fascinating for our family to watch a courting pair of Giant Swallowtail butterflies one within the fold of the upper side of the other, circle and spiral upward together into the sky. God is creative. There is something unique about every species of life to stop us in our tracks and invoke wonder. At these moments we need to say that this is just a hint of what life will be like with Jesus in the New Heavens and Earth. Our children need to hear these truths and see that we set our minds on things that are above as we continue to grow in our faith and enjoy God.

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:1-4

  1. Thank you for lifting our thoughts to loftier things, even as we examine the humbler creatures of God’s creation!

“But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God , that I may declare all thy works.”
    Psalms 73:28 KJV
