Male and Female Bluebirds Puff-Up Feathers for Greater Insulation

God Knows All of the Birds

The maker of the birds, knows all the birds. This is beyond human comprehension. However, it is for us to know as the Holy Spirit enables it, as an illustration, of the divine nature of God. Only He is God, and we are not.

“I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine.” Psalm 50:11

Everything is in His care. He makes the deer give birth, and He watches over every detail of the mountain goat’s existence. Seeing the birds outside my window this morning was not by chance.

I was surprised and excited to see a pair of Mountain Bluebirds. It may be the first time that I could capture both male and female in a photo (above). Maybe God wanted me to see more features of His created bird.

When I studied the pictures, I noticed that the birds looked different than usual. Their breast feathers were all fluffed-up and also the feathers behind their neck made it look like they had no neck. Compare the photo of the male bird on the cold-snowy day with the bird on the previous sunshiny warm day.

The bird on the sunny day, looked much more slender. What a great system provided by God for controlling the level of insulation that the birds receive from their feathers!

Furthermore, I got a closer look at the feet of these birds in the photos. I never noticed how well equipped these birds were to hold on to their perch!

The sunlight caused the colors to be a more brilliant blue on the sunny day. A reason the color looks different is because the color comes from reflected light waves. The feather keratin layer contains bubbles of air made in a precise way so that blue-light bounces off the bubbles and scatter back into the air, and the other colors scatter randomly or are absorbed as purposed by the Creator-God. Clouds block light and so there are fewer rays, causing a more muted appearance. Why did God make the air cells as the source of color? Maybe He has protected birds from becoming a substrate for blue pigment factories. There is no blue pigment to extract. He considers all things from the beginning.

There is much research to consider how and why biological systems of color came about – without God.  Scientists are frequently left without finding any biological function, and have not been able to determine how the structures are formed in the wings.

“It is a lament heard universally throughout the field of structural colors: there is an overwhelmingly poor understanding of the biological mechanisms that control and fine-tune the formation of these color-producing nanostructures.”

The system of creating a blue color in the male bird was not caused by the bird thinking that it would be an excellent way to attract the female. In fact, a good nesting site turns out to be a bigger factor in selecting the mate. The female also did not decide to exclude the precise bubbled structures in her feathers, so she could be more camouflaged in her nest. She is normally completely hidden on her nest because it is in a cavity excavated by a woodpecker or in a man-made nesting box. Perhaps God is making it clear to us that He is the Creator. God knows all the birds. He made male and female birds different on the fifth day of creation, able to multiply and survive the world-wide flood for His glory today!

“Praise the Lord … flying birds …kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! … Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:1a,10b,11,13
