Lord, as we consider our plans help us to see your ways and walk in them. We acknowledge that you establish our steps according to your purpose.
“The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong; for the LORD upholds his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21
“Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3
Migrating birds follow plans that are established by the LORD.
“Even the stork in the heavens knows her time, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming” Jeremiah 8:7a
The behavior of migrating birds is a wonder with only hints of how they are made to follow the best paths across thousands of miles with just the right amount of fuel. In October we had waves of Sand Hills Cranes fly over our land. They flew so high above us that I only knew they were there from hearing the unique sound (there is a recording of their voice here). Hearing them was one of the blessings of being out in my garden.
In November and December, we see the Canada geese migrating south on cold days.
It is refreshing to hear flocks of geese flying overhead because they remind us that the living God reigns and guides. The geese praise God with their particular honking sounds as they move on the path God provides.
Trust in the Lord who makes our paths straight
The examples of God’s absolute guidance of migrating birds can assure us that God will bless our steps as we delight in His word. Here is a link to a song by Judy Rogers with encouragement to trust in the Lord:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
