The earth is full of living creatures.
I shared how butterflies are even found in the heights of the mountains.
Birds are also ubiquitous, an unavoidable witness of the Creator and source of life, the Triune God, including Jesus:
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” Colossians 1:15-20
Birds exhibit a hint of the Lord’s artistry, provision and protection. They illustrate alertness, joy, freedom, songs of praise and the divine nature of their creator.
The White-Tailed Ptarmigan pictured above is a mountain bird, related to grouse found at lower elevations. God provided Ptarmigan with camouflage in the summer forest, and in the winter snow.
Both places where we saw Ptarmigans, there were an abundance of Grouse Whortleberry Berry plants.
“The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.” Psalm 145:15-16
It is a blessing to have these and other creatures as companions on earth.
“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’ So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” Genesis 2:18-19
The Western Tanager is a woodland bird colored like a wildflower.Beautiful!
Mountain Blue birds and the less common Black Rosy Finch were seen on the tree-less areas at 10,000-11,000 feet elevation.
Birds and food plants were made to divide into subspecies that provide life in every place. Just finches alone are found in wide areas of the world including Australia and Africa.
“And God blessed them, saying ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” Genesis 1:22
Gray Jays are always busy flying down from trees to grab a worm or a seed on the ground along the Jim Creek Trail, near Winter Park, Colorado. Steller’s Jays are common on Devils Head Trail near Sedalia, CO. They are closely related to the Blue Jay found at lower elevations across the Midwest and Eastern United States.
At home in Elizabeth, Colorado, I allow wildflowers to grow in my vegetable garden for beauty and to attract an abundance of bees, butterflies and seed-loving birds like the American Gold Finch.
We also enjoy domestic chickens and adopted a rooster this year from a neighbor. He is made well by our Creator to protect the hens, announce the morning, and illustrate flair. Praise God for an abundance of life.
“In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10
