The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” Psalm 29:9
The Lord is sovereign over all that He made including deer and forests
Pronghorn and Mule deer in are giving birth in our area (Elizabeth, CO). What an amazing sight to see a new-born animal stand on its feet. If you look closely at the Pronghorn photo below, you will see that even previously born fawns watched with considerable interest as a newly born fawn stood on its wobbly legs. The likely mother of the first two youngsters was to their right. Above is a photo of the Pronghorn does a few weeks earlier before they gave birth. It was interesting to observe that the two mothers and young go through this experience together.
Why do deer care for their young?
I was equally touched to see a mule deer with her twin fawns (photo below). Why do the fawns know to seek their mother’s milk? Why does the mother care for her young? The only satisfying answer that I can find is that God made the deer’s instincts for His glory. The lesson that I find from God’s word is that “the Lord makes the deer give birth.” Their existence and behavior illustrate that God made all things and upholds them. We learn that Christ, being the exact imprint of God’s nature, “upholds the universe by the word of his power.” Hebrews 1:3.
God’s creation reminds us that He upholds us
“Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.” Psalm 54:4
God’s grace in Christ Jesus is such that Jesus sustains us to the end, guiltless in the day that He reveals Himself.
“God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9
