Painted Lady butterfly

Butterfly Illustrates Endurance

I was surprised to see a Painted Lady butterfly land on a nearby tree this last Sunday evening (see photo below).

How did such a small creature endure the blizzard on Friday and Saturday? Temperatures were well below freezing, 18-22 degrees F at night. To add to the surprise, this butterfly is not known to survive harsh winters and instinctively migrates.

God enables butterflies to be protected and fed to widely proclaim His glory. The Painted Lady exists more widely around the world than any other butterfly. Notice in the photo below that the butterfly landed next to a place where sap was coming out of the tree in a forest. The sap is a source of nourishment for hibernating and migrating butterflies during the winter and early Spring. God also provided the butterflies that use tree sap with a pattern on the underside of their wings that blend in with tree bark.

“The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.” Psalm 145:9

God endures forever and His creatures illustrate the character of endurance.

“Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.” Psalm 111:3

“His steadfast love endures forever!” 1 Chronicles 16:24a

Let us endure in Christ, living in harmony with one another, to glorify God.

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5-6
